In any sport or game, to beat all of your friends and competitors, you must practice. The same goes for Halo 3, but if you are practicing bad habits then you will never become the best.
To win at Halo 3, you must play a lot. Just like basketball players must play often to keep their jump shot accurate, Halo 3 players must play often to stay in shape, Halo 3 shape.
You cannot win at Halo 3 unless you know the maps. You must have all the maps memorized including weapon positions, gadgets (bubble shield, power drain, and etc), and overshield/invisible shield. Once you learn the positions of all of these, you will be able to get the prime weapons and protective equipment to give you a competitive advantage over the competition.
To win at Halo 3, you will need to learn to use the Battle Rifle more than the Assault Rifle. Assault rifles are easy use and shoot; therefore it is the weapon of choice for new players. A Battle Rifle is tougher to use since it is a longer range weapon, but it can be much more effective in killing off opponents. To best way to learn to use it is to play everyday using the Battle Rifle.
Play smarter; use more grenades. Grenades can be used as cover fire when you are hurting and as ways to weaken opponents. If your shields are down and the enemy is coming, you can throw grenades to hold him off until your shield is back. Cover fire wastes your grenades but can keep you alive.
The best players use grenades to weaken opponents more often than new players. If a top player saw an opponent, about 100 feet away, coming towards him, he would toss a grenade to take out the opponents shield and then kill him with one shot from the Battle Rifle. A newer player would pull out the Assault Rifle and run towards the opponent with his gun blazing. In this equation, more often than not, the Battle Rifle would win.
To win at Halo 3, you must take cover when hurting. If your shield gets taken out, you should pull back and take cover until it returns. If you are playing a team game, you must rely on your teammates to finish the job you started. You don’t always have to die trying to finish the kill; you can pull back, recharge your shields, and let your teammates handle it.
Learn to aim for the head. The best players shoot for the face. Hitting an opponent in the head with your bullets will do much more damage then hitting them in the body. Consistently shooting for the head will only come with practice.
Halo 3 is a game of violent chess; the pawns die first. If you are playing a team game, you should never be the first one running into the fight. Hang back and let your teammates go first. This may sound like a crappy tactic but this is true in real life too. To die less, you cannot be on the front lines. You will still stick close to your teammates and help them out; you just won’t be the one in the middle of all the action, where all the grenades are headed.
To win at Halo 3, you must practice the above strategies.
Spend some time watching the movements of how a good player plays. I learned to be better at Halo 3 by watching my “Level 45” roommate play.
Halo 3 can be addicting. There are many times where you will be frustrated.
If you have a frustrating day of Halo 3, you should stop playing for a few days. After a few days, you may find your game has improved greatly.
