Reducing Water Use at Home

( 1 Vote )

Conserving water not only cheapens your water bill but helps to reduce water pollution and protects the environment.

Check your toilet and sinks for leaks. Check the water meter and write down the number when no water is being used. Wait an hour or two and check the meter again. If you have not used any water during this time then the meter should not have changed. If it has, then start checking every sink and toilet in your house.

Don’t flush the toilet too often. If you throw a tissue or piece of trash in the toilet, don’t flush until someone uses that toilet. You can waste a few gallons of water with every unneeded flush. Also, you could purchase a more eco-friendly toilet which uses less water for every flush.

Take shorter showers. Get wet in the shower, turn off the shower to soap up, and then turn the shower back on to rinse off. Also, avoid taking baths which use a lot more water than showers.

Don’t leave the water running when brushing your teeth.

Use a bucket or official rain catcher to catch rain outside. You can use this rain water to water your flowers and plants instead of water from the hose.

Don’t run the dishwasher or clothes washer unless you are doing a full load. Visit http://www.eartheasy.com/live_water_saving.htm for a longer list of ways to save water inside and outside your home.

You don’t have to incorporate all of these practices in your daily life but try to incorporate at least a few of them

Saving water at home can save you money!
