Bowlling 101

Bowling is a popular sport around the world and isn’t to physically demanding, making it easy for everyone to do. Follow these steps to learn how to bowl.

Determine the bowling alley you want to go to. Check online or in a phone book to find out the closest bowling alley to your house. Once you find the bowling alley for you, call them and ask them when they have “open bowling.” Since most bowling alleys have leagues, you need to find out when it is ok for just anyone to stop by and bowl (“open bowl”).

Once you determine what time you can bowl. Drive down to the alley and tell them at the front desk that you are here for some open bowling. Most bowling alleys will either charge by the game or by the hour.  If you don’t own bowling shoes, you will have to rent them from the bowling alley for a small fee. If you don’t own a bowling ball, you can borrow a bowling alley ball for free. Men usually use balls about 14-16 pounds and women use ball from 12-14 pounds. Kids usually use balls from 6-12 pounds, depending on their age.

Now that you have your lane, your bowling shoes are on, and you have a ball, you are ready to bowl. The goal is to knock down all of the pins in one or two shots. Line yourself up a little bit to the right of the front pin if you are right handed and a little to the left of the front pin if you are left handed.

Now that you are lined up correctly, take about 3-4 steps and release the ball so it will roll down the lane towards the pins. If you knock down all the bowling pins then great job, your turn is done. If you don’t knock down all the pins, then you will get another throw before your turn is done.

Each bowler will get ten frames or ten turns to knock as many pins down as they can. In the final frame, you will get three turns if you knock all the pins down on your first or second try. Once the game is done, the person with the highest score wins!

Don’t throw the ball into the air, just release it so it travels a few feet in the air and then hits the lane smoothly and rolls down the alley.

Try to swing your arm like it is a pendulum when bowling. Make sure your fingers fit into the ball. You will bowl badly if your bowling ball doesn’t fit your fingers well.

Make sure to not bowl at the exact same time as the people next to you. This will annoy and distract them. Let them roll their ball and then you can roll yours.
